Avowed is an upcoming Action RPG video game, which resembles the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and Elden Ring, that is set to release in 2024. Like many other triple-A titles, this game has been victim to a bumpy release schedule and changing corporate priorities, which has pushed the release of this game from this year to the next. This game is being developed by “Obsidian Entertainment” and will be published by Xbox game studios exclusively for Microsoft’s gaming platforms, such as the Xbox and Windows.

Obsidian Entertainment is a veteran game development studio with years of experience. It has been widely praised for its Role-playing games like “The Outer Worlds” and “Pillars of Eternity.” Many people thought this game was always supposed to be a single-player game with an extensive campaign story. Still, you might be surprised to hear that this game was initially planned to be an Online Multiplayer game which would be an attractive prospect for investors.

The game is set in the world of Eora, the same universe as the “Pillars of Eternity.” The game’s plot follows our protagonist, investigating a mysterious plague affecting their hometown. If you don’t know about this game, then don’t worry; many people missed any sort of news regarding this game, as it has been in development limbo for a long time due to studio interference and was acquired recently by Microsoft in their acquisition of the Bethesda Studios, which also owned Obsidian Entertainment.

The news about this game’s multiplayer and CO-OP origin came from the final section of its studio’s documentary, uploaded on YouTube a few hours ago. The head of Obsidian Entertainment, “Feargus Urquhart,” stated, “There are a few decisions that I am proud of and a few that I don’t feel so good about.” He continued, and we are paraphrasing here, “I pushed Avowed to be a multiplayer experience rather than a single-player experience for a long time. Ultimately, I think I was pushing for the wrong thing.”

At that time, Microsoft didn’t own the studio and was looking around for potential investors and partners to aid in their continuation of game development. The multiplayer status of the game might have pulled in some investors; that’s why the studio head was so determined on it.

He added, “When you are seeking a multi-million-dollar investment, then you must have something interesting to talk about, which made this the right decision in my mind.” As the documentary switches over to the head of development, “Justin Birtch,” he talks about how they were too focused on changing their workflow and pipeline for this game’s CO-OP development, and after working hard on it, realized that they weren’t focusing on the things that they do best. So they made a mutual decision to pivot from the multiplayer genre and “Focus on making an Obsidian Game rather than something else that doesn’t feel like it.”
